Farmer Killed by Boar.
Charged by a boar which he was driving back from a neighbour’s farm, Mr Olaf Christian Hansen, farmer, aged 59, was killed instantly at Rotakakahi, near Broadwood (235 miles north of Auckland). Mr Hansen leaves a widow, eight daughters and two sons. Raids on Clubs.
Approximately 3250 bottles of beer have been seized by the Invercargill police in raids on city clubs. Two sports clubs, with clubrooms in Spey Street and Yarrow Street, were visited by the police, and 172 dozen bottles of bottled and draught beer (2064 bottles) were seized.
Armed Forces Voting. The intention of the Government to legislate to enable members of the armed forces and essential workers to vote at the general election for their home constituencies was indicated by the Prime Minister, Mr Fraser, during consideration of the Estimates in the House of Representatives yesterday. No Vote for Defaulters?
The question whether military defaulters in detention camps would be allowed to vote at the general election again came under discussion in the House of Representatives yesterday, and from the reply given by the Prime Minister, Mr Fraser, the indications are that they will forfeit this right. “As the law stands at present I cannot see how these men who are in detention camps can vote,” Mr Fraser observed. “They cannot get out to vote, and unles a polling booth is set up in the camps, which is very unlikely, they cannot vote. I cannot see any reason to make any differentiation between persons who are under restraint in institutions.”
Better Quality Petrol. The disclosure that for some time past the majority of motorists had been driving on motor spirit of improved strength superior to the “super” grade spirit obtainable before the war was made before the No. 2 (Auckland) Armed Forces Appeal Board yesterday when several oil and petrol storing and distributing companies appealed for a total of more than 50 employees or former employees. Appearing for the Atlantic Union Oil Company Limited, Mr H. O. Wiles said that all the petrol now being received was 80octane spirit, the use of which brought about a considerable saving in mileage. A large percentage of the petrol was aircraft spirit and its performance was far ahead of that of the 67-octane spirit in use previously.
Complaint by Defaulter. “I have been in a defaulters’ camp for 14 months and have not done one useful day’s work. There are 700 men in the same camp who do nothing but twiddle their thumbs,” stated Thomas Smith, who was charged in the Magistrates’ Court, Palmerston North, with refusing an order to cut kindling wood. In imposing a sentence of three months’ hard labour, Mr Lawry, S.M., commented: “You’ll find something useful to do there.”
