MEETING IN MASTERTON. At the monthly meeting of the Masterton branch of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union, Miss Tankersley was in the chair. Mrs Jansen led the devotions. The temperance fact was supplied by Miss Jackson as follows:—"Alcohol lessens immunity to disease because of its paralytic effect on the white corpuscles in that they remain passive in the presence of dangerous microbes. This enables us to understand why it is that the deathrate in an infectious disease like pneumonia is so much higher in intemperate people than it is in abstainers. Thus the average deathrate from pneumonia is as follows: Abstainers, 18.5 per cent; moderate drinkers, 25.4 per cent; intemperates, 52.8 per cent.” An article was read by Mrs Speight and discussed. The tea hostesses were Mrs H. Speight and Miss Jackson.
