YANGTSE TOWN
RETAKEN BY CHINESE SEVERE CHECK INFLICTED ON JAPANESE. CHUNGKING CONSIDERED SAFE. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day. 1.10 p.m.) LONDON, June 29. Chinese troops have recaptured Shipai, on the south bank of the Yangtse, near the Japanese-held base of Ichang, after being forced to withdraw from the town. Shipai is the most formidable Chinese stronghold barring the way to Chungking, and was the main objective of the Japanese thrust up the Yangtse.
A Chungking message says the Chinese, retreating from Shipai, lured the Japanese into rugged * hill country, where they were unable to bring up artillery or heavy equipment. A hidden detachrfient of Chinese armed with machine-guns and trench mortars, held their fire until the enemy was within point-blank range. The Chinese killed more than 500 Japanese and then launched a counter-attack and recaptured Shipai. Observers believe that the Japanese cannot push up the Yangtse t(7 Chungking unless they employ immensely bigger forces than they have used so far.
