In a big attack on Leghorn yesterday, 100 Flying Fortresses unloaded their bomb load in nine minutes on the harbour and shipping. Oil tanks were blown up, an Italian light cruiser was hit and four supply ships were damaged. Airfields in Sardinia were attacked yesterday and fighter-bombers from Malta raided railway yards, factories and airfields in Sicily. On the preceding night the mainland end of the Sicilian Ferry was attacked. In the Straits of Messina, a new Polish submarine has sunk an enemy merchant ship of about 5,000 tons. The Polish submarine was the DZIK, which is operating with the Royal Navy in the Mediterranean. The ship sunk was north-bound. It was a passenger and supply ship, and was hit with torpedoes.
