Violent Explosion Turns Whole Sky Scarlet
BLOW STRUCK SIMULTANEOUSLY AT HAMBURG FIERCE BATTLE WITH ENEMY NIGHT FIGHTERS LONDON, June 29. Reports from R.A.F. bomber pilots, who took part in an attack in great strength made last night on Cologne indicate that heavy damage was done; Many huge fires were started. Ope particularly violent explosion in the southern part of the city turned the whole sky scarlet. The glow lasted for several seconds before it died down. The enemy sent up the biggest force of night fighters used since the Battle of the Ruhr began. One pilot reported seeing nine dog fights going on at once. Many of the enemy planes were destroyed. Cologne (population 700,000) was last raided a fortnight ago, when factories which were being patched up after the earlier attacks were once more laid in ruins. These attacks link up with the offensive against the Ruhr, as much of the Ruhr products are transported through Cologne. No details of the simultaneous attack on the great North Sea port and U-boat base of Hamburg have yet come in. The R.A.F. also laid more mines in the enemy’s shipping lanes. The night’s work cost 25 bombers. OTHER NIGHT AND DAY ATTACKS While heavy bombers were busy in these attacks, fighters and aircraft of the Fleet Air Arm attacked a heavily escorted enemy convoy of three ships trying to sneak through the Straits of Dover. They damaged one of the ships and at least two of the escort of E-boats. Night fighters were out on intruder patrols in Northern France. This morning two Mustangs shot down six German aircraft in ten minutes a few miles from Paris. This afternoon train-busting planes were out over Northern France. One Canadian pilot, flying a Typhoon, set six locomotives on fire. Two other Canadians, in Mustang’s, hit five locomotives and damaged electric pylons. Others attacked targets ranging from factories to a group of 30 soldiers on a beach.
