FRENCH RIVALRIES
DISAPPOINTMENT IN ALGIERS OVER POOR RESULT OF RECENT NEGOTIATIONS. GIRAUD'S PENDING VISIT TO UNITED STATES. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) NEW RORK, June 28. There are undercurrents of unrest and disappointment among the Frenchmen in Algiers, says the Algiers correspondent of the Columbia Broadcasting System. The de Gaullist weekly paper “Combat” has appeared with a large blank space on the front page, from which an editorial had been deleted by the French censor. It is understood,' says the correspondent, that the editorial declared that last week’s compromise arrangements made a very poor impression on the public. Frenchmen are asking: What is the aim of the American policy? Do the Americans want to see the achievement of real French unity? Do they think that a compromise arrangement leaving the French forces divided can gain the confidence of the French people? Another message from Algiers says that General Giraud is expected to leave for the United States before the end of this week. It is understood that the American invitation did not include General de Gaulle. For the first time since his arrival in North Africa General de Gaulle reviewed Allied troops at Tunis yesterday. Enthusiastic crowds greeted him as he rode through the streets in an open car, and they often broke through the police cordons. In a speech General de Gaulle said that at the present stage of the great drama that was going on the eyes of all Frenchmen were turned toward France. Never had the masses of the French people in France been so closely united as today, and in spite of their misfortunes they retained a vitality which nothing could touch. White House today confirms! a report that General Giraud will visit the United States. He is coming as the guest of the Government in his military capacity.
