Y.M.C.A. SECRETARY
WARM TRIBUTES TO MR GAZE’S SERVICES. PRESENTATION FROM INTERHOUSE ASSOCIATION. Striking tributes were paid last night to the popularity and esteem in which the general secretary of the Masterton Y.M.C.A. (Mr C. W. Gaze) is held. At a large and representative gathering in the Y.M.C.A. gymnasium, a presentation -was made to Mr Gaze from the Wairarapa Interhouse Association.
The chairman of the executive committee, Mr G. Daubney, said that the Interhouse Association felt it could not let Mr Gaze relinquish his services with the Y.M.C.A. in Masterton without expressing its sincere thanks for the ready assistance that Mr Gaze had always given to the association. With courtesy and unfailing cheerfulness Mr Gaze had gone out of his way to give his co-operation. Mr Gaze's influence and presence in the Y.M.C.A. would be keenly missed by members of the Interhouse Association. Mr Daubney referred to Mr Gaze’s help with all interhouse activities that had taken place in the Y.M.C.A., particularly the indoor basketball, and the Interhouse choir. On , behalf of the Interhouse girls’ choir, Miss F. Beiliss expressed appreciation of Mr Gaze’s services and apologised for the absence of Mrs Miller Hope.
A member of the Marine Corps, Sergeant Cornelius, said it was fitting that reference should be made to the sterling service given by Mr Gaze to the visiting service men, as he was severing his association with the local Y.M.C.A. Since they arrived in Masterton Mr Gaze had made them so welcome that they regarded the place as a home. They had beerk-given consideration particularly with -regard to the use of the gymnasium and they regarded Mr Gaze as a true friend. Mr Gaze said it had always been a pleasure to do his best for the Interhouse association in conformity with the practice of all other- Y.M.C.A. secretaries of giving service. He thanked Mr Daubney and the others for the kind remarks they had passed and said the Marines were receiving the same hospitality as members of the New Zealand forces. All were brave men who deserved the best. With regard to the use of the gymnasium by the Marines, Mr Gaze said that in keeping themselves fit they were preparing to protect the people of New Zealand. Mr Gaze said he would be remaining in Masterton and offered his services to the Ihterhouse Association.
