CARTERTON
LIBERTY LOAN AMOUNT SUBSCRIBED. (“Times-Age” Special.) The amount received toward the Liberty Loan in Carterton up to the period ended June 24 is as under: — Carterton Post Office: Inscribed Stock, £2710; National Savings Investment Account 1 , £2319 is; Bonds, £1494 13s 4d, making a total of £6523 14s 4d. The amount subscribed to the Liberty Loan at the Carterton trading banks is £14,710, making the total subscriptions £21,233 14s 4d. An old lady 84 years of age walked into the Carterton Post Office yesterday and informed the clerk that she had saved five sovereigns for years and had kept them for a specific purpose, but now that the liberty of the British-speaking race was at stake she thought she could not do better than to take out War Bonds for the amount.
Football. The Carterton B team to play Masterton B on Saturday will be: Phillips, Kennedy, Garnett, Chapman, Ireland, Forbes, McPhee (2), Catt (2), Hannah, Geange, Taylor, Thomas, Uprichard, Bird. Personal Items. Mr E. H. Smith, of Wakelin Street, Carterton, who has been an inmate of the Masterton Public Hospital, has returned to his home. Yesterday afternoon the Mayor, Mr D. L. Taverner, made a presentation from the residents of Carterton to Sapper I. H. Knutson, who had been on a visit to his parents and who left again today oh his return to camp. Yesterday presentations were made by the secretary of Loyal Heart of Oak Lodge of Odd Fellows, M.U.1.0.0.F., Bro. C. J. De Lacey, to two members j of the Order, Sapper I. H. Knutson' and Pte. C. E. Cook, on behalf of the officers and members of the lodge.
A letter received from Pte. Oswald A. Daysh, who is a prisoner of war in Italy, by relatives in Carterton, states that he is enjoying good health and is being well treated. He had received parcels through the Red Cross Society. Mr and Mrs C. V. Zillwood, very old residents of Dalefield, have sold their farm and will come to Carterton to live. The people of Dalefield on Monday evening will tender them a farewell social gathering.
Macri War Effort. The Maori residents of Carterton will hold a dance in the State Theatre, Carterton ,on Saturday evening. The proceeds are to be devoted to the Maori war effort. The music will be supplied by Mr T. Udy’s orchestra. Soldiers Entertained. The Parkvale Hall was filled last night, when Lieut. L. Renall, Sgt. D. Deller and Pte. A. Oliver were entertained. Excellent dance music was played by Mrs V. J .Ashton’s orchestra. Much-appreciated extras were played by Mrs J. James and Mrs H. Bain. Novelty dances were won by Mr H. Renall and Mrs King, and Mr B. Gallon and Miss Grace Lukies.
Mr Len Knowles, in an appropriate speech, presented each of the guests with a gift from the settlers of the district. Lieut. Renall returned thanks on behalf of himself and comrades.
Soldiers to be Entertained.
Final preparations have been made for a social gathering to be tendered to Ptes. W. Sage and P. Thomas tonight at the Belvedere schoolroom. Good music will be provided and the ladies of the district will supply the supper. Home and School Association. The annual report of the Home and School Association to be submitted to the annual meeting of the Association on Friday, states, inter alia:—Our membership has not increased as we had hoped. There were also two dances held, one at Parkvale and one at Carterton. From these successful functions the sums of £l3 and £l4, respectively, were added to our account, making a total credit of £69 9s lOd —a very satisfactory balance. Mrs Dunce was elected to our committee during the year. The prospect of getting our basketball court is now much brighter and the Education Board is to lay down a court cofeting approximately £2OO. REGENT THEATRE “HOW GREEN WAS MY VALLEY.” There will be finally shown tonight one of the greatest dramas ever brought to the screen—“ How Green Was My Valley”—in which the chief roles are taken by Walter Pidgeon, Roddy McDowell, Donald Crisp, Maureen O’Hara and Anna Lee.
