WAR ISSUE
PRESENTED TO THE PEOPLE IN AFRICAN ELECTION GENERAL SMUTS ASKS FOR EVERY VOTE. AS INDICATION OF NATIONAL DETERMINATION. (By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) (Received This Day, 11.45 a.m.) JOHANNESBURG, June 23. The Prime Minister (General Smuts) declared that the general election in South Africa on July 7 was in the nature of a referendum on the war issue—the greatest episode in the history of mankind. He warned that every possible vote should be accorded the Government, to show that South Africans were determined to prosecute the war until the freedom of mankind was assured. The Associated Press Johannesburg correspondent says German radio stations are urging South Africans to vote against the Smuts Government. Members of the Cabinet say this is impudent, but natural, in view of the gains for the Axis if General Smuts were defeated.
