DUBIOUS ACTION

BY NEW ARGENTINE GOVERNMENT

PRO-NAZI MADE MAYOR OF BUENOS AIRES. ANTI-AXIS NEWSPAPER SUPPRESSED. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) WASHINGTON, June 20. The democratic sections in Argentina are perturbed by the appointment of a pro-Nazi, General Basilo Pertine, to the mayoralty of Buenos Aires, and the suspension of one of the leading antiAxis newspapers and three pro-demo-cratic radio stations. Berlin-patterned supervision over the newspapers and broadcasting has been put into force in spite of the promises made by the new Ramirez regime of closer pan-American co-operation. General Pertine for years has been a director of half a dozen German firms which are black-listed in America, and he is also the leader of the Nazi element in army circles. Diplomats in neighbouring countries are now convinced that Pertine’s appointment indicates that General Ramirez does not intend any really strong measures against the Axis fifth columnists, who are still working in Argentina, let alone an outright diplomatic'break. The suspension of the diplomatic codes, which was announced last week, does not mean much, since it is still possible to pick up a telephone in Buenos Aires and call the Wilhelmstrasse.
