The death occurred at the Dannevirke Hospital of Mrs Emma Stone, widow of Mr George Stone, formerly of Pahiatua, at the age of 77 years. The Ven F. G. Evans, New Plymouth, archdeacon emeritus of Taranaki, celebrated on Sunday the sixtieth anniversary of his ordination to the. priesthood on Trinity Sunday, 1883. The engagement is announced of Nancy, younger daughter of Mr and Mrs Percy Welch, Upper Plain, to P.F.C. Donald E. Myers, U.S.M.C., son of Mr and Mrs J. Myers, Horton, Kansas.
At a large gathering at Mangamaire Mr and Mrs L. J. Ralph, who are leaving to reside at Dargaville, were entertained at a social function and made presentations from the settlers and organisations in the district. Mr and Mrs B. M. Clarry, “Rata,” Waikino, Waihi, announce the engagement of their only daughter, Jean Kathleen, to Trooper Geoffrey Norman, 2nd N.Z.E.F., only son of Mr and Mrs Norman Blatchford, of the Training Farm, Masterton. Mr W. L. Hunter has been appointed representative of the Wairarapa Trades Council on the Wairarapa College Board of Governors. At last night’s meeting of the board the chairman, Mr A. Owen Jones extended a welcome to Mr Hunter and also expressed pleasure that Mrs J. L. Hair had been re-elected as the Govenment representative.
Dr J. Malcolm, professor of physiology, and Dr W. P. Gowland, professor of anatomy, Otago Medical School, both of whom have reached the retiring age, have resigned, their resignations to take effect as from February 29, 1944. Professor Malcolm has occupied the chair of physiology since 1905, and Dr Gowland was appointed professor of anatomy in 1914. Appreciation of the services rendered by Mr T. Hanley, representative of the Trades Council for four years on the Wairarapa College Board of Governors was expressed at last night’s meeting of the board. Mr W. R. Nicol said Mr Hanley was a valuable member, and he had always had the interests of the college at heart. Mr L. T. Daniell said Mi- Hanley was a particularly useful member of the farm committee, and had always given his best services. Consequent upon the appointment of Mr S. A. Mannering as manager of the Napier branch of Dalgety and Co., Ltd., Mr A. L. Fetch, ’ manager at Opotiki, has been transferred to the post of manager at Masterton. After returning from overseas, where he saw service in the Great War, and prior to joining the company in 1920, Mr Fetch was farming. Later he became stock agent to the firm at Te Kuiti. In 1924 he was appointed auctioneer at Whangarei, and in 1935 was transferred to Opotiki as manager.
