PATRIOTIC DANCE TOWN HALL FILLED. J“Times-Age” Special.) The Town Hall was filled on Saturday night when the Patriotic Dance Committee held its weekly dance. The feature of the evening was the music supplied by Mrs Ashton’s Orchestra. Extras were played by Misses C. Saba and N. Tocker. Mr Ashton was M.C. Several novelty dances were held. Miss Lois Ritchie was the winner of a bed cape. Supper was served by the committee.
Service Men Entertained,
A number of men on leave were entertained at morning tea in the Services Club on Saturday by the District Patriotic Committee, Mrs J. G. McKenzie, being in charge of the arrangements.
The Mayor (Mr J. W. Card) made a presentation to each guest of behalf of the residents of the district.
The gifts were suitably acknowledged by Lance Corporal F. Staples. The following were the soldiers en-tertained?-Sergeant Hiroti, Corporal Stables, Privates M. Viles, W. Saywell, McGarvie, B. Bidwell, G. Jackson, R. Lawrence and Chasland.
Apologies for absence were received from Miss Card, Mesdames D. H. S. Riddiford, Arch. Clark, N. C. C. Shepherd, and S. Raper. Mrs Alexander played a number of pianoforte selections which were much appreciated. Personal Items. The funeral of the late Mr F. W. Burt took place at the Featherston Cemetery on Saturday afternoon. The services at the Methodist Church and the graveside were conducted by the Revs. Woolford and H. White. The pallbearers were Messrs D., G., S., H., and N. Burt and C. Jackson. The late Mr Burt was born in Featherston where he had lived all his life. He was a prominent farmer and in his younger days a good rifle shot and golf player. He leaves a family of five sons and four daughters. The sons are Messrs Gordon, Sydney, Harold, Norman and Islay Burt, and the daughters Mrs C. Jackson (Picton), Mrs F. C. Benton. Misses Edith and Roma (Palmerston North). His wife predeceased him some years ago. Among the many beautiful wreaths was one from the directors and staff of the Glaxo Laboratories.
Sister Pat. Edwards, who has been on the staff of the Wellington Hospital, has been called up for service overseas, and entered camp today.
Purchase of Bull
At the annual sale of Dalemere and Avonsyde Ayrshires at Ngakuru, Waikato, last week, Mr Geo. Yule, Featherston, purchased the yearling bull Avonsyde Senator for 40 guineas. COSY THEATRE "TO THE SHORES OF TRIPOLI.” On Wednesday night there will be shown one of the most brilliant dramas ever brought to the screen, "To the Shores of Tripoli,” telling the story of the U.S. Marines with John Payne. Randolph Scott, Maureen O’Hara and Nancy Kelly in the leading roles. It is considered to be the most beautifully coloured picture ever brought to the screen. Owing to excessive bookings the management has decided to hold a special screening at 3.15 p.m. on Wednesday.
