INVASION SPEARHEAD

AMERICAN AMPHIBIOUS FORCE

ORGANISED IN PACIFIC & ATLANTIC.

FOR LANDINGS ON HOSTILE & FORTIFIED SHORES.

(By Telegraph—Pres?. Association—Copyright) (Received This Day. 1 p.rn.) WASHINGTON, June 20. The formation of a powerful United States Army and Navy amphibious force, thousands strong, which probably will be the spearhead of any American invasion of Europe, is announced by the Navy Department. Organised on commando lines, the force is ready for the most difficult of all tasks—a landing on a fortified and hostile shore.

The recent operations against Attu were initiated by units of this force, under, Admiral Francis Rockwell, commander of the amphibious forces in the Pacific. Admiral Rockwell's Atlantic counterpart, Rear-Admiral Alan Kirk, said one objective of the new force is to eliminate differences between Army and Navy practices and terminology, and to remove misunderstandings during operations. In the new set-up Marines are not 1 mentioned, hinting that the new force is design«d probably for a time when the Army will be heavily engaged after landing on hostile shores.
