MAGNIFICENT WORK
DONE BY BRITISH WOMEN. TRIBUTE TO VOLUNTARY SERVICES. (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, June 16. The W.V.S. (Women’s Voluntary Services) are five years old today. They have grown from 330,000 on the outbreak of war to a membership of more than 1,000,000. The Minister of Home Security, Mr Morrison, paid a timely tribute, saying: “I think if I were asked to try and sum up the achievements of the W.V.S. I would say that they consist of 1,000,000 magnificent women who are simply applying the principles of good housekeeping to the job of helping to run their country in its hour of need. They are doing it under the problematic and sometimes heartbreaking conditions of total war. That is their distinctive and womanly contribution to victory. It is something no man could do, and something the whole nation will not forget.
