Mr J. F. Murphy, of Christchurch, has been appointed district manager of the Public Trust Office at Pahiatua. The death occurred yesterday at Pahiatua of Mrs Mary Josephine Walsh, wife of Mr Patrick Michael Walsh, at the age of 66 years. Mrs D. Edwards, Masterton, has received a cable from her husband, Sgt. Albert Edwards, stating that ho has arrived safe and well at his destination.

The engagement is announced of Nora, daughter of Mr and Mrs Trevor Bcetham Kourarau, to Jesse Creech, U.S.M.C., of Snowhill, North Carolina, U.S.A. Mr and Mrs Duckett, Johnstone Street, Masterton, have received word from their son Harold, who is serving with the Middle East Forces, that he is fit and well.

Dorothy Thompson, American columnist and foreign correspondent, is to marry Maxim Kopf, a Czech painter and refugee from Prague. Miss Thompson was formerly married to Sinclair Lewis, the novelist. Mr Frank Thompson, of 5 Elizabeth Street, Masterton, celebrated his 86th birthday today. He was the recipient of many expressions of good wishes and congratulations from his friends and relatives.

The engagement is announced of Ida May, youngest daughter of Mr J. Thompson, of Taueru, to Reginald Albert ('‘Bill), R.N.Z.A.F., second son of Mr and Mrs R. A. Wilton, of Kumeroa, Woodville.

The death has occurred at Petone of Miss Dorothy Wild, who is well known in miniature rifle circles in the Wairarapa. For 20 years she was secretary of the Petone Ladies’ Miniature Rifle Club, and in 1924 won the Wellington B grade championship and gold medal.

The members of the United Friendly Societies’ Dispensary Board recently paid a surprise visit to Bro. G. Norris's residence in College Street, Masterton, when Bro. Gunn, on behalf of the board, made a presentation to Bro. Norris, who has retired after sixteen years’ service in connection with the Board and the Friendly Societies’ movement generaly. Flying Officer James -M. Smith, son of Mr Shepherd Smith, formerly of Masterton, has been awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. Flying Officer Smith was educated at the Masterton West School. A brother, Acting Flight-Lieutenant Jack Smith, who also went to school in Masterton, was awarded the Distinguished Flying Medal about a year ago. Mr G. C. Petersen forwarded to the Palmerston North High Schools' Board of Governors on Wednesday night his resignation as teacher of law and accountancy subjects at the Technical High School. The resignation was accepted with regret, Board members speaking in appreciation of Mr Petersen’s services over a period of ten years. Mr Petersen, who is a solicitor, formerly resided in Masterton, where he was educated.

The late Mr Byrnes, who died recently at Feilding, was well known and highly respected in many parts of the North Island of New Zealand. Born in Victoria, Australia, he came to New Zealand in 1901- and settled at Masterton, working on the Matahiwi Estate. Later going to Bulls he was manager for the late Sir - James Wilson, of Ngaio Station, where he spent about 16 years. He had resided in Feilding during the past 12 years.
