WOMEN’S INSTITUTE
MEETING AT CARTERTON AN INTERESTING ADDRESS. COMPETITION RESULTS. (“Times-Age’’ Special.) At the monthly meeting of the Carterton Women’s Institute, Miss Wolters presided. The local secretary of the Red Cross Society wrote suggesting that -a money donation be forwarded in place of the cakes heretofore sent to the men of the forces in the Masterton and Greytown Hospitals. This was agreed to, and the proceeds of voluntary contributions by the members brought in more than the suggested annual amount. An interesting address on “The Netherlands as They Were" was given by the Rev. Father MacGlone, and was much appreciated. In thanking the speaker, the presi- ( dent expressed the gratitude of the members for the informative nature of the talk, and also for his courtesy in consenting to spare time to attend the meeting.
The competitions, which were judged by Mrs J. Standen, resulted as follows: —Pair of mittens from wool supplied by the Patriotic Committee: Mrs A. T. Hawke 1, Mrs M. H. Hume 2, Mrs G. Steven 3. Bottle of tomato sauce: Mrs T. G. Reading and Mrs G. Steffert, equal. 1. Egglcss fruit cake; Mrs L. Hurndell 1, Mrs G. Steffert 2, Mrs T. G. Reading 3. Best winter vegetable (three of a kind): Mrs G. Steffert 1, Mrs L. Hurndell 2. It was announced that a round table conference would be held at the July meeting in order to discuss the remits to be brought forward at the Dominion Conference.
The motto for the month was given by Mrs J. McPhee.
Mrs L. Hurndell was congratulated on supplying the winning recipe for the cggless fruit cake in “Home and Country.”
