CARTERTON
WOMEN’S INSTITUTES MEETING AT PARKVALE. ("Times-Age” Special.) Mrs D. N. Adams presided over a good attendance at a meeting of the Parkvale Women’s Institute held in the Parkvale Hall. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded Mrs N. McKinnon for a very interesting demonstration on the making of brooches from new bread. Mrs Conwell was the winner of a competition and Mrs A. Kay was the winner of the competition for a dinner held in aid of the soldiers’ comforts funds .
The monthly competitions were judged by Mesdames A. Elkins and W. Hammond and they were accorded thanks for their work. The awards were as follows: —Seniors, article from waste, Mrs N. McKinnon 1, Mrs Conwell 2. Mrs Nolan 3. Juniors (sewing), Miss J. Lukies 1, Miss Mavis Lukies 2, Miss G. Lukies 3. Flowers (seniors), large: Mrs E. Rose 1, Mrs R. P. Williams 2. Small flowers, Mrs N. Peacock 1, Mrs E. Rose 2, Mrs R. P. Williams 3. Flowers (junior), Miss M. Lukies 1, Miss H. McKinnon. Shrubs, Mrs R. P. Williams 1, Mrs L. Nolan 2, Mrs N. McKinnon 3.
Water Pipes Broken.
Yesterday morning’s severe .frost caused the breaking of water pipes at several local residences. Straying Dogs. Despite repeated warnings concerning straying dogs in the business area of the borough of Carterton, very little notice is apparently being taken by owners to observe the by-law. As a result the council has instructed tho borough solicitor to take action against offenders as a warning that the bylaw must be observed. Shooting of Horse. Mr C. E. Miller, of Carrington, states that the shooting of his horse, which was found dead on his property recently, was perhaps not wilfully done. Borough Estimates. Mr D. L. Taverner (Mayor) presided over a special meeting of the Carterton Borough Council last evening. There were also present: Crs. E. McKenzie. H. Mortenson, L. M. Clark, C. E. Stevens, C. J. DeLacey, O. W. Wolters and the Town Clerk, Mr P. A. Cole. The business of the meeting was the consideration of estimates for the current year. The estimated expenditure foi- the year was set down at £4386, as against an expenditure of £3513 16s 2d last year. As a result, rates in Carterton have been slightly increased. The estimates were passed. The consolidated rate will be 16d in the £, as against 14.5 d in the £ last year. The sum of £lOO has been voted for the swimming baths, £l5O granted to the fire brigade, and £2O to the Plunket Society. For tarring and sanding, the sum of £650 has been allocated, and a like amount for general maintenance.
REGENT THEATRE “SHINING VICTORY.”
Tonight the dramatic story, “Shining Victory,” will be finally shown. The chief characters are in the hands of James Stephenson, Geraldine Fitzgerald and Donald Crisp. A March of Timo will also be shown.
