NON=ESSENTIAL INDUSTRY

NEW ORDER ISSUED IN CANADA. OTTAWA. May 7. The Minister of Labour has issued an order requiring single men between nineteen and forty and married men between nineteen and twenty-five in about twenty non-essential industries or occupations to register by May 19 for transfer if necessary to essential industry. The order covers men employed (1) in taverns or liquor, wine and boor stores; (2) retail sale of candy, confectionery, tobacco, books and stationery or news (magazines or newspapers); (3) barber shops, beauty parlours; (4) retail and wholesale florists; (5) gasoline filling stations; (6) retail sale of motor vehicles and accessories; (7) retail sale of sporting goods and musical instruments. In addition all men designated under the. Mobilisation Regulations are covered by the order if they are in any of the following occupations, regardless of whether the occupation is in one of the listed industries: (1) Waiter, taxi-driver, elevator operator, hotel bellboy, domestic servant; (2) any occupation in or directly associated with dyeing, dry cleaning (but not including laundries), baths, guide service, shoe shining. It now becomes obligatory for every man in the age of the martial class designated under the Mobilisation Regulations and engaged in one of the specified industries or occupations to apply to the nearest em ployment and selective service office by May 19. Measures will be taken to ensure fair minimum earnings for those directed to alternative works.
