TRAGEDY ON SHIP
THREE MEN DEAD. TRAPPED BY SCALDING STEAM. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) ’ AUCKLAND. June 14. Three men working in the engineroom of an overseas ship at Auckland were scalded to death and a fourth was seriously burned when a boiler accident occurred directly beneath them. They were: Killed: Granville Henry Malins, aged 30, of Harp of Erin. Duncan MacArthur, aged 33, of Point Chevalier; and one United States seaman. Injured: Thomas James Barclay, aged 45, welder, of Grey Lynn. The men were working on boiler equipment at about 3.30 p.m. when the accident occurred. Because of the comparatively confined space in which they were working they were unable to escape immediately and it was not possible for a rescue party to recover them until the steam had blown itself out. Three of them were found to be dead and the fourth man, who was very severely scalded, was removed to the Auckland Hospital where his condition was stated to be very serious.
