HOSPITAL NURSES
QUESTION OF RELEASE ON ACCOUNT OF MARRIAGE AND OTHER REASONS. WAIRARAPA BOARD DISCUSSION. In reply to questions asked by Mr J. F. Thompson regarding the release of nurses who wished to marry or resign on account of health reasons, the Managing Secretary of the Wairarapa Hospital Board, Mr Norman Lee, said at today’s meeting of the board that all cases were carefully checked. Mr Thomason said he would not be a party to separating husband and wife, but he asked if, say, a married woman could resign to live with her husband, or if a girl could resign to get married. Considerable trouble was taken in training the nurses, and it was reasonable to take steps to retain them in View of the shortage of hospital staff.
Mr Lee said the manpower officer had so far agreed to all applications he had received so far as the board was concerned. The Matron of the Masterton Hospital had never placed any obstacle in the way pf releasing nurses. Mr Lee cited several cases in which releases had been granted, and the board expressed itself as being satisfied with the position.
