GERMANV MAV CRACK SUDDENLY BELIEF OF MR ELMER DAVIS. JAPAN LIKELY TO LAST LONGER. (By Telegraph—Press Association— Copyright) . NEW YORK, June 15. The belief that Germany would crack suddenly, and that Hitler would have no chance of surviving' the war was expressed by the Director of the Office of War Information, ■ Mr Elmer Davis, when addressing a Press conference. He said that the Germans would oust Hitler in, an attempt to gain a compromise peace. Mr Davis predicted that the war against Japan would outlast the European conflict. Though there were some signs of dissatisfaction appearing in Japan, he said, the Japanese battle losses had been low and the Japanese Fleet was still strong and intact. Mr Davis said that the losses from U-boat action this month were the lowest since Pearl Harbour, while the anti-submarine tactics had constantly improved. There was a marked deterioration in the quality of the German submarine crews. The United States will have 11,000,000 men in the armed forces by the end of 11)43, and possibly more in the first six months of next year, the chief of the United States War Manpower Commission Mr McNutt, told the Appropriations Committee, of the House of Representatives. The number includes 1,700.000 men who will be added in the next six months.
Munitions and industrial employees now number 10,000.000. This figure, said Mr McNutt, must be increased to 11,300,000 in the next 12 months. Two and a half million civilian and industrial workers will be transferred to the armed forces and to munitions, and more than 1.000,000 housewives, students. older workers, etc., will be drawn into the war effort. The total national labour force will reach the record level of 65,400.000.
