BOMBING OF SICILY

MAINTAINED BV AIRCRAFT FROM MALTA AND NORTH AFRICAN BASES. BRITISH AUTHORITIES CLOSE SYRIAN FRONTIER. LONDON, June 5. There are no reports of any major air activity in the Mediterranean in the past 24 hours. Operations have been confined to strafing and patrol fighting. Last night Mosquito bombers from Malta were out over Sicily and the toe of Italy, where they bombed and shot up a number of railway stations. On Sunday night Wellington bombers from North Africa attacked Messina, where incendiary and 40001 b. bombs were dropped on the railway yards and round the harbour. The target area was well plastered. Long-range fightes set fire to an enemy schooner in the Aegean Sea. A British United Press message from Ankara states that the British authorities have closed the Syrian side of the frontier between Syria and Turkey. It is stated that this action has been taken to check a leakage of information from Syria and Palestine into Turkey, where it would possibly be received by enemy agents. Yesterday the newly appointed Com-mander-in-Chief of British naval forces in the Levant, Admiral Sir John Cunningham, had talks with President Inonu and several Turkish Ministers.
