COUNTY AFFAIRS
MAURICEVILLE COUNCIL ANNUAL MEETING YESTERDAY. MR CHEETHAM RE-ELECTED CHAIRMAN. (“Times-Age” Special.) The annual meeting of the Mauriceville County Council was held yesterday afternoon. Apologies for absence were received from Councillors A. Forsberg and J. H. MacDonald. Mr E. W. Cheetham was unanimously re-elected chairman. Councillors referred to the splendid work that had been done by Mr Cheetham during the past year. Mr Cheetham. in reply, expressed appreciation for his re-election and thanked the Councillors for their cordial co-operation during the year. It was resolved that the whole council be the finance committee, and that the council meetings be held on the second Monday in every month. The monthly meeting was also held, Mi’ E. W. Cheetham presiding. The treasurer’s report, which showed a credit balance of £642 15s lid, was adopted. Accounts amounting to £582 13s 8d were passed for payment. In accordance with the notice already published, a general rate of l:;d in the pound, which included the hospital levy and bridge rates, was struck. It was resolved that such rates become payable on July 14, 1943, and that a discount of five per cent be allowed on all general rates paid on or before August 13, 1943. The current year’s highway estimates were dealt with, and the clerk was instructed to prepare the same for submission to the Main Highways Board. The chairman was appointed representative of the council on the District Highways Council. It was resolved that the County Clerk (Mr AV. V. Madden) be asked to attend the County Clerks’ Conference, to be held in Wellington next month. A letter was received from the Masterton County Council regarding the apportionment of heavy traffic fees, and it was resolved that the Masterton County Council be advised that this council favours a further agreement for the term of two years. The clerk reported on the action taken in regard to certain arrears of rates. The county overseer, Mr P. N. Jamieson, reported that repairs to Cleland’s Road Bridge would be commenced immediately. Prospective work on the various highways and roads was discussed and arranged for.
