SIX=A=SIDE TOURNAMENT HIGH STANDARD OF PLAY. MANY THRILLING ENCOUNTERS. The six-a-side hockey tournament conducted by the Wairarapa Men’s and Women’s Hockey Associations, which was commenced on Monday last, but then had to be abandoned on account of heavy rain, was concluded on the Lansdowne grounds last' Saturday afternoon. Bright sunshine favoured the players on this occasion, and there was a large attendance of spectators. A high standard of hockey was maintained throughout the tournament, and almost without exception the games were very evenly contested. All the finals provided thrilling encounters, and evidence of the even standard of the teams engaged was provided by the fact that in the three finals played the winning margin was one goal to nil. Eight teams were engaged in the men’s competition. Carterton A won the A section, and College A the B. The meeting of these teams in the final provided an exceptionally keen tussle, and evoked considerable enthusiasm among the spectators. College showed a good degree of combination and their win by 1 goal to nil was well deserved. The senior ladies' competition drew ten entries. Greytown A won the A section, winning three games and drawing one against Excelsior B. Carterton A and Excelsior A with three wins and a draw each, tied in the B section, but on a goal count, Carterton’s tally .of 11 against Excelsior’s 10 gave them the right to contest the final with Greytown, This final was also keenly contested. Neither side had scored when time was called and extra time had to be played. After several minutes during which both sides went close to scoring, a pass across the goal mouth was mopped up by the Greytown left winger, who netted a smart goal. In the junior ladies’ competition, the section winners were Excelsior A and Sincerity A. Another close game resulted, but Sincerity did most of the attacking and their win by one goal to nil was a good indication of the run of play. The tournament arrangements were excellently carried out by Mr A. Southey.
