BIG INCREASE
IN AUSTRALIAN DAIRY SUBSIDY NOW £6,500,000 A YEAR. DISTRIBUTION TO PRODUCERS. (By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) CANBERRA, June 11. A new subsidy for the Australian dairy industry of £6,500,000 a year, to be paid retrospectively from April 1 last, has been announced by the Australian Prime Minister, Mr Curtin. It replaces the subsidy of £2,000,000 a year granted last October, and will be paid for butter, cheese, and milk delivered to condenseries. The Government is anxious that the whole amount of the subsidy should be passed on to the producers to lift the standard of living on dairy farms, stimulate production \nd raise efficiency. The Australian Dairy Equilisation Committee is being asked to recommend the method of distribution of the subsidy Mr Curtin stated today that action was being taken to prevent an increase in land values. Sales of dairy lands will be subject to control by the Treasurer. The announcement of the subsidy had been delayed pending determination by the Arbitration Court of the basic wage for the dairying industry.
