LAMPEDUSA AND LINOSA SURRENDER TO ALLIES
Airfields in Sicily Vigorously Bombed MANY ENEMY AIRCRAFT DESTROYED ON GROUND ACTION EVADED BY AXIS FIGHTERS f LONDON, June. 13. In the Mediterranean the Allied air forces kept up their offensive yesterday. While Lampedusa was being pounded into surrender, Flying’ Fortresses and Marauders attacked three enemy airfields in western Sicily. On one airfield they found 76 enemy aircraft and 72 on another. They plastered the airfields with splinter bombs and did a great deal of damage. Very little opposition was met with from the ground. Most of the very few enemy fighters which were in the air kept away from the Allied bombers and fighters. Malta-based fighter-bombers attacked targets in Sicily yesterday and last night. Today saw the surrender of the tiny, island of Linosa, between Lampedusa and Sicily. It was the third Italian island to put up the white flag in three days. It surrendered to the British destroyer Nubian without a shot being fired.
