HIGH RECOVERY RATE

IN TREATMENT OF MENINGITIS IN NEW YORK REPORT BY CHIEF OF CITY HEALTH DEPARTMENT. HOPES OF GREAT SAVING OF LIVES. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day. 11.30 a.m.) NEW YORK, June 11. Dr Emanuel Appelbaum, chief of the Meningitis Division of the New York City Health Department, has achieved a recovery rate of 95-per cent in 221 meningitis cases treated with sulfadiazine. Only eight of the patients died. The newspaper “P.M.” says the significance of these figures may be gauged by the fact that in 1942 one in five meningitis victims died. The year 1943 has witnessed a widespread meningitis epidemic throughout the country.Nearly 10.000 cases have been reported since January 1. a total seven times greater than in 1942. Almost as stunning as the low death rate, says Dr Appelbaum. is the wonderful speed and simplicity with which the cases clear up. Moreover no relapses have been reported.
