BOGUS STORY

OF DEATHS OF SPRINGBOKS

IN ACTION CORRESPONDENTS IN- LONDON DECEIVED. EXPLANATION BY THE PRESS ASSOCIATION. On May 20 last a Press Association cablegram from London gave a detailed account of an interview with “Captain A. T. Harris of the South African Air Force” in which it was stated that 18 members of the Springboks’ team of 1937 had been killed in action since the outbreak of war. The accuracy of this statement was questioned in Wellington at the time and it has since been ascertained that the statement was entirely at variance with the facts. The Press Association has now received a cablegram from its London correspondent stating that the Director of Information, Pretoria, reports that no member of the Springbok team has been killed, but that L. Jennings was wounded and is now recovering. The Press Association correspondent adds that he received his information from a well-known and highly-respect-ed Australian journalist, who was satisfied with the credentials of “Harris,” although it is now apparent that the latter was an impostor.
