W.W.S.A. Dance.

A most successful dance was held in the Masonic Hall, Masterton, last night by the Masterton branch of the Women’s War Service Auxiliary. Bright music was supplied by Mrs V. J. Ashton’s Orchestra and Mrs A. Whittaker was an efficient M.C. Members of the auxiliary served supper. Appeal for Donations. The Wellington Provincial Patriotic Council appeals for the donation of portable and table model gramophones, records and unused needles for distribution to men serving in the Pacific area and on small naval vessels. Donations may be left with the Town Clerk, Mr G. T. O’Hara Smith, Masterton. Interhouse Dance Tonight. The Wairarapa Interhouse Association will hold another of its weekly dances in the Masonic Hall tonight when a special maxina waltzing competition will be held. Post entries will be accepted and it is anticipated that the competition will prove interesting. Mrs Ashton’s Orchestra will supply the music and supper will be served. Drivers’ Licences. Attention is drawn to the notice appearing in our advertising columns that drivers’ licences for the ensuing year for the Masterton Borough may now be renewed upon application to the Borough Council office during office hours. Early application will relieve the last-minute rush and consequent waiting. . Harrier Activities. Masterton harriers will hold another run tomorrow, starting from the Park Oval at 2.30 p.m. This is a combined effort on the part of both clubs—Masterton and Kiatere —and all runners, ex-members, and supporters who are interested in the continuation of the sport, are requested to attend, so that some definite arrangements can be made in regard to future running .

Appeals Adjourned. An adjournment sine die was granted by the Armed Forces Appeal Board in Auckland yesterday in all cases, including four cases where the reservists concerned opposed the. appeals, when the Mental Hospital staff position was investigated. Mi’ F. J. Cox, Crown representative, said that there was a shortage of 89 males and 26 females on the mental hospital staffs in the Dominion, and he was instructed to press for adjournments, whatever the physical grading of the men. Indoor Basketball. The Wairarapa Interhouse Association’s indoor basketball competition will be resumed in the Y.M.C.A. gymnasium, Masterton on Monday night, June 14. Following are the times: — Cathie’s B v. Hansell’s B, 7 p.m.; United v. Sparklets, 7.18 p.m.; Rangers A v. Garages, 7.35; Rangers B v. McDuff’s B, 7.54; McKenzie’s v. McDuff’s A, 8.12; Cody’s v. C. Smith’s, 8.30; Transport v. Borthwick’s, 8.50; W.F.C.A. v. Woolworth’s, 9.6; Lancers v. Hansell’s, 9.24; Cathie’s A v. Hosiery Mills, 9.42. Financial Debate. With the exception of a brief interval for the introduction of legislation to postpone by-elections pending between now and the general election, all of yesterday’s sitting of the House of Representatives was occupied with the debate on the Budget. Five speakers —hour Government members, one Opposition and one Democratic Labour, spoke yesterday, bringing the number of members so far participating to 13. Eight have been Government members and four Opposition. The House adjourned at 10 o’clock till 10.30 a.m. today.

The weekly routine orders for No. 21 Squadron, Air Training Corps state, inter alia: —Parades: A and B Flights, Monday, June 14 and Thursday, June 17, at 6.50 p.m., at the Wairarapa College, Masterton. C Flight, Tuesday, June 15 and Thursday, June 17, at 6.50 p.m., at the State Theatre, Carterton. Training: June 14, A Flight, mathematics and navigation; B Flight, mathematics and science. June 15: C Flight, mathematics, navigation and science. June 17: A Flight, drill, signals and P.T.; B Flight, drill, basic fitting and P.T.; C Flight, drill, P.T., signals and gas. The following officers have been promoted to the rank of flying officer: Pilot Officers F. M. Cunningham and S. V. Playsted.
