RED CROSS SOCIETY

COUNTRY DISTRICTS. MEETING OF SUB-CENTRE. A meeting of the Country Districts Sub-Centre of the Red Cross Society was held in Masterton yesterday afternoon, Mrs A. C. Gawith presiding. Members stood in silence for a few moments in sympathy with those whose relatives were among the war casualties during the month. Mrs Gawith expressed regret at the illness of Miss K. Dixon, honorary treasurer, and members expressed their sympathy and hoped that Miss Dixon would have a speedy recovery. It was reported that Mr R. Gully had offered to carry on the work of treasurer im the absence of Miss Dixon. A vote of thanks was passed to Mr Gully. The secretary reported that the bookcase donated by the sub-centre had been installed in the soldiers’ ward at the Masterton Hospital, and it was suggested that if every family with a country district member donated one modern book, the nucleus of a library would be formed.

Arrangements were made for the intensive course of voluntary aid training to be conducted from June 16 to June 30. Volunteers were required to assist with serving luncheon to the students. According to the programme to be carried out, the time spent in Masterton should be both interesting and enjoyable.

Mrs J. Andrew stated that the Nelson sub-centre was in need of fleeces for spinning and it was decided that a donation of fleeces be made to assist this branch of the Red Cross Society in its work.

The sewing group reported that 129 articles had been made during the month, many of these entailing much work.

Mr and Mrs J. de Castro, Mesdames A. Milne and E. Shaw were thanked for the work they had carried out in moving goods to the new depot; MiW. White of Messrs Levin & Co. for assistance he had given over the past three years, and Mr G. Houlbrooke (Tiraumea) for the donation of a. fleece.
