VAIN PROTESTS

MADE BY THE GREEKS AGAINST NAZI PERSECUTION OF JEWS. MURDEROUS DEPORTATION METHODS. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day, 9.45 a.m.)) LONDON. June 8. The Greek Information Office states that German persecution of Jews in Greece has made the Greeks intensely indignant. The Athens University Council, as a result of the intolerable persecutions of Jews in Salonika, petitioned the occupation authorities, requesting that Salonika Jews of Greek nationality be treated as Greek subjects. The petition was rejected, after which there ’was a wholesale deportation of Jews from Salonika. The first batch of 3.500 Jews was sent by rail, early in March, 1943, to Poland. Men, women and children were herded into trucks, which were sealed, leaving one small window for ventilation. One petrol can of water was allowed to each truck. There have been further deportations. A large number of the victims are reported to have died during the journey.
