SUCCESS EXTENDED

CHINESE OPERATIONS IN YANGTSE VALLEY AMERICANS BOMB TONKIN. ACCORDING TO JAPANESE REPORT. LONDON. June 8. Chungking reports that Chinese forces are now in complete possession of Itu, 30 miles from Ichang. The remnants of the Japanese troops are said to have retreated south-eastwards. The Chinese have made further progress in their drive eastward.

A Japanese news agency reports that American aircraft from China flew over French Indo-China and dropped bombs in the province of Tonkin.

ENEMY THWARTED BUT CHINA MUCH IN NEED OF OUTSIDE HELP. (Received This Day, 11.45 a.m.) CHUNGKING, June 8. The victorious Chinese counter-of-fensive in the Upper Yangtse area has thwarted the main Japanese aims of severing communications between the Hunan and (.Szechwan Provinces and breaking the Chinese “rice bowl,” said a Government spokesman. “The Japanese admittedly plundered some granaries, but the damage is small. If we succeed in recapturing Hwajung, 100 miles south-east of the major Japanese base at Ichang, our whole position will be restored 'to normal. China needs a bigger air force and heavy armaments, including tanks and artillery, to recapture more important points.” Another spokesman said: “Fears abroad concerning China's economic plight are a little bit exaggerated, but we have great need of outside help, not* only in arms, but in all kinds of supplies.”
