HEAVY BLOWS
STRUCK BY RED AIR FORCE. AXIS RAID ON GORKI SMASHED. LONDON, June 9. The Russians have kept up massed air. raids behind the German lines. Announcing new blows in their sustained air offensive against targets behind the German lines, a special Moscow communique states that last night large forces of Soviet long-range bombers attacked airfields, ammunition dumps and fuel stores. Many enemy aircraft were destroyed or damaged on the ground and the crews of Soviet bombers report a particularly heavy explosion at an airfield nuorth-west of Briansk. All but one Russian aircraft returned.
The communique also reported a new German attempt to raid Gorki, an important industrial centre 200 miles east of Moscow. Only two German planes got through to the city. Altogether seven enemy planes were destroyed. No major change is reported on the land front. On the central front west of Moscow the Red Army forced the Germans to withdraw across a river.
