NINETEEN JAPANESE PLANES SHOT DOWN.

SEVEN AMERICAN AIRCRAFT LOST.

LONDON, June 9

Washington reports a big air battle near Russell Island, in the Solomons area, between United States fighters and Japanese Zeros and torpedobombers.

About 50 Japanese planes were attacked by American fighters. Nineteen of the Japanese were shot down and six others damaged. The Americans lost seven planes, but three of the pilots were saved.

It is now known that the Japanese losses in killed on Attu, in the Aleutians, up to yesterday, totalled 1,826.
