IN AIR ATTACKS ON PANTELLERIA
Eleven Axis Planes Shot Down AGAINST ALLIED LOSS OF TWO 4 ENEMY REPORTS OF ATTEMPT TO LAND ON LAMPEDUSA LONDON, June 8. Yesterday’s air attack on Pantelleria started at dawn and was kept up throughout the day. The enemy again put up an air umbrella over the island, but British, South African and American aircraft sent bombs and bullets raining down on to the targets. When the last plane left the island dust and smoke from the earlier raids was drifting almost to Sicily. Flying Fortresses also added their weight to the attack. During the day eleven Axis planes were shot down. The Allies lost two.
Sicily was attacked by fighter-bombers from Malta. In daylight they bombed warehouses and night intruders attacked transport. Last night the Berlin and other Axis radio stations stated that British forces tried to land on the island of Lampedusa, about 100 miles south of Pantelleria. Some Axis reports describe the action as being a commando raid; others as an attempted landing. They claim that the attack was repulsed. There is no confirmation in London that such an attack has been made.
