EARTHQUAKE REPAIRS

SEVERAL BUILDINGS BEING STRENGTHENED. BANK OF NEW ZEALAND INCLUDED. > A start has been made on the complete reconstruction of the Bank of New Zealand building in Queen Street, Masterton. Work on the earthquake damaged structure will take about six months. The new construction will embody earthquake resisting features and will be of heavily reinforced concrete bands and piers chased into new walls. The , front of the building will be new, and the back and side walls will be consid-. erably strengthened and altered. The residential portion at the rear of the building will also be strengthened. Good progress is being made with the reconstruction of the building formerly occupied by Messrs Graham and Co. in Queen Street. The building is being reconstructed on earthquake-resisting lines.

Work on the Union Bank of Australia, Ltd., is still proceeding.
