The death took place at Wellington yesterday of Mr George Augustus Parrant, formerly of Clareville, at the age of 61 years. At Pahiatua yesterday the death occurred of Mr James Charles Hunter, a well known resident of the district, at the age of 79 years. Mr and Mrs E. G. Williams, Masterton, announce the engagement of their second daughter, Thelma Mary, to Walter Exton, eldest son of Mr and the late Mrs M. J. Firth, Burns Street, Dannevirke.

The engagement is announced of Elsie, only daughter of Mr and Mrs J. E. MeV. Calwell, Cornwall Street, Masterton, to Archibald, eldest son of Mrs and the late Mr Peter McCalman, “Ocean View,” Fortrose, Southland. Major Kermit Roosevelt, aged 54 (a son of the late President Theodore Roosevelt), died on Friday last in Alaska, a Washington cablegram reports. Major Roosevelt had been stationed in Alaska for several months. Both in the last war and this he served in the British Army before America’s entry into the war.

The death has occurred in Christchurch of Mr William Hayward, . a former member of the Legislative Council, reports a Press Association telegram. He was born in Christchurch in 1868. He was president of the Canterbury A. and P. Association in 1915 and president of the Canterbury Employers’ Association 1923-25. He was chairman of the United Party Political Association 1931-32 and was appointed to the Legislative Council in 1934.

The death occurred at Wellington on Sunday of Mr John Hughes Dick, well known as a Y.M.C.A. worker and. Association footballer. Born in Wellington, Mr Dick took a prominent part in the Methodist Bible class movement. He was one of the foundation members of the Palmerston North Y.M.C.A. For a number of years he was a member of the board of directors. When he returned to Wellington he became a member of the local board of directors, and was chairman of the physical work committee. The death took place on Saturday of a well-known Wellington citizen, Mr Louis Michael Hyams. Mr Hyams. who was 59 years of age, was born in Wellington, his parents being the late Mr and Mrs Maurice Hyams. He was educated at The Terrace School and Wellington College. On leaving school, he was articled to the late Mr W. C. qhatfield, architect, and, though he served his articles, he did not continue in that profession, having accepted an appointment as designer by the Carrara Ceiling Company, Wellington. For the last 25 years he had held a responsible position with the Wairarapa Farmers’ Co-operative Association, Ltd., Wellington.

The death has occurred of the Rev James Milne, Epsom, a well-known Minister of the Presbyterian Church of New Zealand. Born near Aberdeen, Scotland, his first charge was the Chalmers Memorial Church, Sydney, and after six years there he accepted a call to St. Paul's Church, Oamaru, and then to St. Andrew’s, Auckland. Returning to Scotland, he ministered in Inverness, the north of England, and London. He returned to New Zealand in 1907, accepting the charge of St. James’s Presbyterian Church, Thames, where he served for 26 years, retiring to Auckland in 1933. He attended the Lausanne Conference in 1927 as delegate for the New Zealand General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church.
