NEAR MISSES

’ ON TWO BATTLESHIPS SHOWN BY PHOTOGRAPHS. EXPLOSION OF MERCHANT SHIP. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 10.45 a.m.) RUGBY, June 6. According to photographs taken later, the Flying Fortresses scored near misses on two of the Italian battleships at Spezia.

Three battleships and numerous smaller craft were in the harbour when over 100 Fortresses, unescorted, reached the target. The merchantman which was hit exploded and numerous fires and smaller explosions were observed.

Only three enemy fighters were encountered by the bombers. The damage is not yet assessed, but it is officially stated that hits were observed in the dock area, among warships and other shipping. Lightnings bombed hangars, workshops and airfields at Monseirato, in Southern Sardinia. They encountered ten enemy fighters and shot down two. Marauders bombed* shipping at Porto Ponte Romano, hitting a 500-foot motor vessel and a coal dump. The largest formation of enemy fighters of recent days was encountered by Mitchells and Lightnings attacking Pantelleria. Fifteen to 20 Messerschmitst and Focke-Wulfs intercepted th<£ attackers. Four enemy planes were destroyed. Three of our aircraft are missing from all operations.
