SMASHING BLOW
AT ITALIAN NAVAL BASE AND FLEET Struck by Flying Fortresses THREE GREAT BATTLESHIPS DAMAGED WITH HEAVY CRUISER AND MERCHANTMAN (By Telegraph. —Press Association. —Copyright.) LONDON, June 6.. Three of Italy’s greatest battleships, one heavy cruiser and one merchantman, were damaged, when Flying Fortresses made a daylight raid yesterday on Spezia Harbour, states a United States Army Air Force communique from Algiers. It adds that the bombers left great fires in oil depots and installations. The raid on Spezia marked another stepping up of the Allied onslaught on Europe. Made in daylight by the biggest force of Flying Fortresses ever sent out from North Africa, it was the largest flight yet made by aircraft from African bases, involving a round flight of 1300 miles. The Fortresses packed their bombing into six minutes and all got back safely. Explosions, fires and smoke made it impossible to see the full extent of the damage.
