NOBODY MISSING
SINCE FALL OF WHIROKINO BRIDGE DETAILS OF INJURY & DAMAGE PROBABLY COMPLETE. REPAIR AND REPLACEMENT PLANS. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) LEVIN, This Day. Nobody has been reported missing since th,e collapse of the Whirokino bridge on Thursday evening, and it is now thought probable that the jeep containing American service men and a car containing two people were the only motor vehicles that plunged into the river, together with two cyclists. The presence of vegetables floating near the bridge had suggested that a lorry had gone over into the river. The Minister of Works (Mr Semple), visited Whirokino yesterday and inspected the damaged bridge. It is stated that a start will be made immediately with the erection of a new bridge. The old bridge is to be repaired and made into a footbridge meantime.
Though dragging is continuing, only one cycle had been recovered up to last night.
A span of approximately 700 feet has gone, and the Whirokino Highway is likely to be out of commission for a long time.
