CARTERTON
P. AND A. BUILDING CARRYING OUT OF REPAIRS. (“Times-Age” Special.) The building contractor, Mr D. Andrews, of Masterton, and his staff are making splendid progress with the repairs to the Wairarapa Pastoral and Agricultural Society’s building which was badly damaged by the earthquake 12 months ago. The outside work on the building has been almost completed.
Football. The Carterton B team to play Masterton B at Masterton on Saturday will be: —Phillips, Spooner, Catt (2), McPhee (2), Ireland, Taylor, Garrett, Kennedy, Chapman, Phelps, H. Butcher, Geange (2), Hannah. The Carterton senior team to play the Army at Featherston tomorrow at 2 o’clock will be: —Desmond, McPhee, Mason, Humphries, Hurndell, O’Neale, Stringfellow, Mathieson, Groubc, Busch, Tilyard, Mahupuka, Hurley, Playle, Smith, Reading, and McKenzie. The team is asked to assemble promptly at the Marquis Hotel at 1 o’clock.
Personal Items. The engagement is announced of Eileen Leta, eldest daughter of Mr and Mrs V. N. Gordon, Carterton, and Corporal Ray J. Langlois, U.S.M.C., New Orleans, U.S.A. , Tonight at the Belvedere Schoolroom a farewell social gathering will be tendered Mr and Mrs E. G. Thorne, of Carrington, who have lived in the district for very many years. Mr Thorne has retired from farming and will in future live in Carterton.
Wells Dry. As a result of the long spell of dry weather during the summer and autumn practically all wells in the district have gone dry, and in order to obtain a supply of household water on farms many wells have had to be deepened. The disastrous earthquake of 12 months ago also had its effect upon underground streams and springs. Post Office Hours. The Carterton Post Office will be closed in all branches with the exception of the telephone exchange on Monday. Postmen’s and rural deliveries will not be made. Round Up of Stray Dogs. The Carterton borough staff this morning commenced to round up the' stray dogs in the business area of the borough. Up till 10 o’clock several canines had been impounded in the borough yards. Legal action may be taken against the owners for a violation of the borough by-law. Bank Holiday. On Monday next (the King’s Birthday) the banking premises in Carter-j ton will be closed. Renovation of Public Library. Tenders to close at 5 p.m. on Friday, June 11, are invited for the renovation of the dwelling and rest room at the Carterton Public Library.
Patriotic Committee. Mr D. L. Taverner presided over a meeting of the Carterton Patriotic Committee held on Wednesday night. There were also present: Messrs G. S. George, A. H. Callister, A. T. Murray, C. A. Chennells, A. E. Hall, L. J. Fairbrother, J. A. B. Lawrence, L. H. Smart, J. Steel, Geo. Brown, Mesdames P. L. Beere, E. T. Beaven, E. Standen and Miss O. W. Wolters. Apologies for absence were received from Mrs L. J. Fairbrother, Miss C. Berrill and Mr W. Martin.
Motions of sympathy Were passed to the wives and parents of airmen and soldiers who had paid the supreme sacrifice overseas. The campaign committee and lady assistants were congratulated upon their efforts, and the success of the recent campaign. Enquiries are to be made from the Wellington Headquarters as to the distribution of Red Cross Society funds for purposes outside those for which they were subscribed. The Masterton Ladies’ Patriotic Committee’s offer to pack all parcels for the Wairarapa district was accepted, and a vote of thanks was passed to the members for their generous offer. An offer of the use of the sample' rooms in Broadway, Carterton, as .a depot for the storage of waste paper was accepted with thanks and a sign is to be erected on the building as a guide to the public. The key to the room can be obtained from the office of the Wairarapa Joinery and Cabinet Co. It was decided that the need for waste rubber be advertised and that various district committees be asked to carry out a comprehensive campaign throughout the district. A request is to be made to scoutmasters to obtain the co-operation of Boy Scouts for collecting purposes.
REGENT THEATRE DOUBLE PROGRAMME. The double programme, “Tugboat Annie Sails Again” and “Parachute Nurse,” will be finally shown tonight.
