U-BOAT HUNTERS

CANADIAN BUILT FRIGATES. OTTAWA. In the battle to rid the seas of enemy U-boats, Canadians are hearing a new name mentioned. The new, fast, powerful corvettes that Canada is adding to her Navy and building for her Allies are to be known as frigates. They are part of Canada’s answer to the Nazi challenge. Their job will be to hunt the submarine packs and drive them from the sea lanes of the world.

The name frigate was first used for ships in war by the Portuguese in the 16th and 17th centuries. Later the French and British adopted it to designate a standard class of warship. They mounted 24 to 50 guns and were next to ships of the line in fire power and size, and were used for cruising and scouting. With the great increase in tonnage and naval units in the last century, frigates dropped out of sight, their place being taken by our modern cruisers. However, the name has again been revived by the Canadian Navy.
