CARTERTON
LICENSING COMMITTEE ANNUAL MEETING. ("Times-Age” Special.) Mr H. P. Lawry, S.M., presided over the annual meeting of the Wairarapa Licensing Committee, held at Carterton yesterday. There were also present: Messrs W. C. M. Sorensen. F. W. Smith, J. Purvis, C. R. Holmes and F. W. Wood.
The reports (concerning the hotels in the district were favourable, and the following renewals were granted: — Martinborough Hotel (J. W. Griffiths, transfer from E. J. Lane); Whakataki (N. A. Christiansen); Taueru (W. A. Jones), Morison’s Bush (S. Scott), Trentham (Joseph Quinn), Marquis of Normanby, Carterton (Geo. A. Vincent), Tauherenikau (F. B. Brough), Foresters’ Arms, Greytown (A. W. S. Brice), Club, Greytown (R. D. Vance), Taratahi (F. C. Yule), Tinui (W. A. Pringle), Empire, Featherston (L. S. Labone), Club, Martinborough (M. A. Quinn), Lake Ferry (Hugh Sw'anson), Club, Carterton (C. E. Larsen), Royal Oak, Carterton (W. H. Steel), Taueru (R. A. Stow), Gladstone (R. C. Donworth), wholesale licence (W.F.C.A.). The renewal of the licence of the Greytown Hotel was held over till the next meeting of the committee, as certain repairs are to be carried out. , Personal Items. Mrs T. Burling. Pirinoa, is the guest of Mrs A. E. Hall, Park Road. Mention was made at the annual meeting of the Wairarapa Licensing Committee, held at Carterton last night, that Mr J. W. Card, Featherston, had not missed attending an annual meeting for 48 years. He was complimented upon his fine record, which is considered to be unequalled in the Dominion. It was stated that Mr J. F. Thompson had attended for 30 years without a break. Mr W. Abbott, of Feilding, is visiting Carterton, and is the guest of Mr and Mrs P. Hodder; Lincoln Road. Mr and Mrs Geo. E. Allen, of “Taipua,” East Taratahi, who had been visiting Auckland and other northern towns, have returned home. Gas Meter Damaged. Further damage has been done to slot meters, the property of the Carterton Borough gas works, the locks on a meter in the tennis pavilion at the Carterton Bowling Club’s grounds having been broken.
Card Party. There was a good attendance at the card party held by the Boy Scout Committee last evening. The prizewinners were: Ladies, Mrs Ticehurst, Senr., 1, Mrs Thompson 2; men. Mr Ticehurst, Junr. 1, Mrs Herdman 2. Scoutmasters’ Meeting. The scoutmasters in the recentlyformed South Wairarapa district met at the residence of Mr Fairbrother. Carterton, on Tuesday evening. There were present Messrs R. N. Barton (County Commissioner), E. F. Fairbrother (District Scoutmaster), L. R. Huntley (Group Scoutmaster), J. McKenna, A. Stretton, W. Fryer Scoutmasters), G. Hunter, F. Skeet, J. Tyford, J. Eccles, M. Phillip, P. Nilsen, I. Martin, M. Vaughan, J. Dew (assistant Scoutmasters),, A. Tait, J. W. Fellingham (Scouters). Mr R. N. Barton presented warrants to Messrs E. Fairbrother, A. Stretton, W. Fryer, G. Hunter and M. Phillip. Several matters, both instructional and recreational, were dealt with. Following a discussion, amendments were made to rules governing the Scout relay race and it was decided that this event be held on Saturday, July 3. Supper was provided at the conclusion of the meeting.
In yesterday's report of the farewell gathering tendered to Captain and Mrs Waite, the name Mrs Stuart should have read Mrs Stunt. REGENT THEATRE DOUBLE PROGRAMME. “Tugboat Annie Sails Again, - ’ an outstanding comedy featuring Marjorie Rambeau and Allan Hale will be shown tonight. Also on the programme is “Parachute Nurse,” a daring drama of the nation’s unsung heroines, in which Marguerite Chapman and William Wright have the leading roles.
