NEW POTATOES

MAXIMUM PRICES. ANNOUNCED BY MINISTER. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) ' WELLINGTON. This Day. Prices for early-crop potatoes grown in the North Island and Nelson district were announced yesterday by the Minister of Agriculture, Mr Barclay. The price is the maximum for new potatoes delivered free on rail at grower's station, sacks included. The prices and period in which they will operate are as follows: —

Up to September 30. 1943, £42 10s; October 1-October 15, 1943, £35; October 16-October 31, 1943, £3O; November 1-November 15, 1943, £25; November 16-November 30, 1943, £2O.

“The above prices,” said the Minister, “will be incorporated in a Price Order in due course, but in the meantime it is only fair that growers should know immediately of the decision to set the above prices which are to be maximum prices operating for new potatoes till the end of November next. The question of prices to be set for new potatoes grown in the South Island (other than Nelson) during this period, and also for all potatoes delivered subsequent to November 30, is at present receiving consideration and an announcement of these figures will be made as soon as a decision has been reached.

‘I wish to emphasise,” added Mr Barclay, “that the prices announced are ceiling prices only and have been agreed to by representatives of the growers from (he two main producing areas. The actual prices to be paid to growers will adjust themselves to a level according to supply and demand, not exceeding these figures. Growers will be free to make their own marketing arrangements during the currency of the above-mentioned prices.”
