BOMBS AND SHELLS
POURED ON ITALIAN STRONGHOLDS Pantelleria Again Bombarded by Navy SHIPS MEET NO EFFECTIVE OPPOSITION FURTHER AIR ATTACKS ON SARDINIA AND SICILY. LONDON, June 2. In the Mediterranean air war last week more than 1400 tons of bombs were dropped on the Italian mainland and islands. These are the highest figures on record for this theatre of war. It is also disclosed that 558 abandoned or wrecked aircraft have been found on airfields in Northern Tunisia, Of these 433 were German. Allied naval forces on Sunday night and again yesterday afternoon shelled the Italian island fortress of Pantelleria, in the Sicilian Narrows. In the night attack many shells were directed at the harbour area. There was no effective opposition, and the warships were undamaged. Yesterday hits were scored on barracks and battery &,reas. This time there was some retaliation from the shore guns, but there were no casualties on our ships. An Allied naval force shelled Pantelleria on May 13.
Fighter-bombers and bombers also attacked targets on Pantelleria yesterday and Sardinia and Sicily came in for further bombing.
