CARTERTON
FAREWELL GATHERING CAPTAIN AND AIRS WAITE. (“Times-Age” Special.) Last evening the Salvation Army Hall was well filled when Captain and Mrs Waite, officers in charge of the local corps, were the guests at a farewell gathering. During their stay in Carterton, Captain and Mrs Waite have gained the respect of a wide circle of friends. The esteem in which they are held by all with whom they have come in contact was expressed by Major Dick, of Masterton (who presided), the Rev. W. F. Stent (Ministers’ Association), Mrs Tyler (local Army Corps), Mr J. M. Nicholls (chairman of the Carterton Band), Mrs Stuart (Women’s Home League), and Miss Hatchard (Army secretary). The following contributed to an excellent musical programme:—Recitation. Miss M. Mitchell; song, Mrs Nightingale; son, Mrs W. M. Worsfold; song, Mr A. Kay. The accompaniments were played by Mrs Dick and Miss V. Sorensen. The Carterton Band, twentythree strong, rendered some very fine numbers.
Major Dick referred to the splendid work which had been accomplished by Captain and Mrs Waite during their residence in Carterton. On behalf of himself, the Carterton Salvation Army Corps, and the Carterton public generally, he wished them the best of luck and health in their new sphere of labours.
Mrs Waite thanked those present and their good friends in Carterton for the many kindnesses shown to her. Captain Waite also expressed his. thanks for the good wishes and said how much he had appreciated his stay in Carterton. He thanked his comrades in the Salvation Army who had assisted him in many ways. The members of the Ministers’ Association he had found to be real friends. He particularly wished to thank Mr Spooner, bandmaster, for having come with the band to provide splendid music throughout the evening. Apologies for absence were received from Mr Ben Roberts, M.P., the Revs. W. J. Couling and R. Grice and Mr W. A. Tate, Greytown.
Personal Items. Mr and Mrs C. Ordish, who had resided in Dalefield for many years and who are now living in the Waikato district, were entertained at a farewell gathering by members of the Dalefield Methodist Church prior to their departure, and were presented with a hanging mirror. Mrs Welch, who had been on a vifeit to Gisborne, has retured to Carterton. Mr and Mrs Bert Standen, of Levin, are visiting Carterton and are the guests of Mr and Mrs C. Sayer, Kent Street.
Messrs C. Groube and W. A. Kempton, of Carterton, returned home yesterday from a holiday spent in the South Island. Vital Statistics. In May there were 5 births, 5 marriages and 3 deaths registered in Carterton.
REGENT THEATRE “FOUR MOTHERS.” A brilliant drama, “Four Mothers,” will be shown tonight, featuring Priscilla Lane, Rosemary Lane. Gale Page, Lola Lane and Claude Rains.
