LESS WHEAT TO BE GROWN IN CANADA. MORE COARSE GRAINS & FLAX SEED. OTTAWA. May 16. In a survey dated April 30 of what farmers intend to plant, a change over from wheat is indicated. The total wheat area is placed by the Dominion Bureau of Statistics at 17,000.000 acres, a reduction of 21 per cent from 1942. Substantial reductions are shown in all - the prairie provinces where increased acreages of coarse grains and flax seed are in prospect. The barley area for 1943 is estimated at 8,000,000 acres, an increase of 16 per cent over 1942 which is the largest area ever devoted to this crop in Canada. The acreage for oats is substantially above that for 1942. The flax seed area at 2,500,000 acres is 69 per cent above that for 1942.
