NEW CHAPTER
IN POLITICAL DEVELOPMENT OF FRANCE FORMATION OF JOINT GOVERNING BODY. FIRST MEETING IN ALGIERS. (By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) LONDON, June 1. A newly-organised joint governing body, called the French Central Executive Committee, met for the first time yesterday at Algiers. The Morocco radio said that those present were Generals Giraud, de Gaulle, Catroux (Fighting French leader in the Middle East), and Georges (the prominent French soldier who was reported yesterday to have escaped from France to join Giraud), and MM. Massigli (Fighting French Director of Foreign Affairs), Andre Philip (Fighting French Director of Labour and the Interior), and Jean Monnet (diplomatist and financier, appointed by General Giraud). Two other members are to be appointed.
“The Third Republic is finished, and a new chapter opens in the political development of France,” says the “Daily Mail,” referring to the meeting. The committee is “now in being,” and the ‘Mail” describes it as in other words a provisional French Government.
