CHINESE DRIVE IN YANGTSE VALLEY REPORTS OF FURTHER PROGRESS. DESTRUCTION OF JAPANESE AIRFIELDS. LONDON, June 1. The new Chinese offensive seems to be going well. A Chungking communique reports further progress on the Yangtse River front. Chinese and Allied aircraft are reported to have destroyed a number of Japanese airfields.
SOME UNCERTAINTIES BUT FORMIDABLE ENEMY EFFORT CHECKED. NEV/ YORK, June 1. The Chungking correspondent of the “New York Times” says that in spite of the encouraging news from the battlefront a civilian evacuation of Changteh indicates that many uncertainties remain. So far there is no sign of the large Japanese reinforcements, which would indicate that the enemy is serious about threatening Chungking. The correspondent of the Associated Press of America says that the Japanese offensive which started last week was regarded as the most formidable attempt in six years to end the war in China.
