STAGE’S LAVAL
MAURICE CHEVALIER PERFORMS FOR GERMANS. APPEARANCE IN BERLIN. (Bv Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) LONDON, May 27. “Maurice Chevalier is to the stage what M. Laval is to politics,” declared Miss Josephine Baker, upon her arrival in Algiers to entertain the troops. She added: “Chevalier and I played together at the beginning of the war for the purpose of whipping up British and French spirit. Now he is helping Goebbels to keep up the German morale. He has even performed in Berlin.”
Miss Baker was wrongly reported dead Ijefore the Allied occupation of North Africa but she turned up in Casablanca.
